I have been spending a lot of time thinking about Rotary lately, and it has occurred to me that in Rotary, as in everything I have been involved in, you get what you give, and actually I can say that as far as Rotary is concerned, I have actually gotten more in return than I have given. The work I have done for Rotary has been tedious at times, and it must be done in between all the other activities that fill my day, so it is hard to find time to finish the task. But when it is complete, the satisfaction of having accomplished something worthwhile is exhilarating and renewing. It brings me back for more. When you sit on the side lines and observe and don’t take an active roll in the projects of the club, or consider our group a “breakfast club with a bunch of guys”, it is easier to think that you are not vital to the club, that we wouldn’t miss you if you didn’t show up and besides, we don’t really do anything useful. Unfortunately I think that is something we have all felt a little bit of at times. We begin to do what we always have done and thereby get what we always have gotten. It’s time to shake that image off and wake up.We need to breathe new life into our club. We need to re-engage everyone in projects. We need new members and we need to get them involved in committees and projects immediately to see what we are involved in and that their contributions are worthwhile. RI Pres Ray Klinginsmith’s challenge for us this year is to enhance the vitality and viability of our Rotary Club by getting Bigger, Better, and Bolder so that we can succeed in these difficult times as a club, and as an International organization.
In an effort to meet that challenge, we are embarking on a new partnership with 2nd Harvest Food Bank and Mountain Valley Express to take our golf tournament to the next level. We will be working with the East Union Cemetery to help maintain their grounds. We are adopting a section of Highway 120 between Airport Rd. and Main St. We will be working on a District Simplified Grant to obtain funds to aid our Literacy project where we will adopt a school, do a read-in and donate dictionaries. We will continue to support the chicken fryer project in Gulu with Catherine Coon. We will support the efforts of the Rotary Foundation by qualifying for the EREY in which every member of our club will donate at least $100 to the Rotary Foundation. Of course we will continue the tradition of our Crab Feed to generate much needed funds for our scholarship program.
These activities and the many others that we participate in and support are what define us as a club. We are not a club of check writers only. We the club are where the working wheel of Rotary meets the road and we are equipped to address the problems of our community to make the world a better place. Are you with me? Let’s find someone to share our Rotary Dream! Have some Kool-Aid!!!
Yours in Rotary Service,
